Practical Information

Travel to New York City
New York City is served by three major airports: John F. Kennedy (JFK), La Guardia (LGA), and Newark (EWR), each of which is served by a number of major airlines, with direct flights and connections to hundreds of cities in the United States and elsewhere.  If you plan to travel by train, Amtrak provides connections to Penn Station.  New York City's principal bus station is Port Authority Bus Terminal, located at 8th Avenue and 42nd Street.

Access and Map

Verdi's Third Century: Italian Opera Today takes place in the heart of Greenwich Village in Manhattan.  The area is easily accessible by public transportation or taxi from other parts of New York City.  Maps and schedules are available on the website of the MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority).  The nearest subway stations are West 4th Street and Astor Place.

A downloadable map of the NYU Washington Square Campus is available here.  The conference venues are marked on the map as follows:

Casa Italiana Zerilli-Mariṃ (24 West 12th Street): no. 10
Humanities Initiative (20 Cooper Square, 5th Floor): no. 39

Accommodation
To be sure, Manhattan has one of the highest concentrations of hotels in the whole world.  Any online travel resource will allow you to locate a number hotels in the area.  Travel search engines such as Kayak.com and Tripadvisor.com allow to conduct simultaneous searches on numerous websites, providing access to a variety of hotel rates and special offers.  Rates and value for money vary widely in New York City, and we encourage you to shop carefully.

If you wish to conduct a hotel search by address or zip code, you may want to use Washington Square or 10011.

For those who are looking for accommodation within walking distance of the conference, we suggest that you consider the following hotels, which are not ordinarily searchable through the major online travel sites:

Washington Square Hotel: Wonderful boutique hotel at the northwest corner of Washington Square, a five-minute walk to Casa Italiana Zerilli-Mariṃ and a ten-minute walk to the Humanities Initiative.  September 7 Update: Regrettably, this hotel now appears to be fully booked for the dates of the conference. (It may  be worth checking again in the event of any cancellations.)

Seafarers and International House: Located a fifteen-minute walk from the Washington Square campus, offers a range of budget accommodation.

Other hotels within a 20-minute walk of the conference include:

Hampton Inn Manhattan-Soho

Holiday Inn Soho
Comfort Inn Chelsea

In addition to conventional hotels, B&B accommodation, short-term rentals or sublets, and more can be found through a variety of websites, including Airbandb.com and Craigslist

Are you looking for a roommate for the conference?  Please contact Francesco Izzo with your requests and preferences and we will do our best to find someone you can share a room with.

Dining
Many of New York City's most appealing restaurants (includin some of the world's finest dining destinations) are located in, or within walking distance of Greenwich Village.  Closer to the time of the conference we will publish a list of our favorites on this website.

Saturday nights are especially busy in New York City, and it is advisable to reserve a table in advance, especially if you wish to visit some of the hottest restaurants or if you are with a large party).
