Giuseppe Verdi: Words, Notes, Legacy
April 8 – August 29, 2014, Elmer H. Bobst Library at New York University

exhibit posterIn October 2013, Giuseppe Verdi turned 200.  The exhibit Giuseppe Verdi: Words, Notes, Legacy paid tribute to Verdi’s legacy exploring scores, librettos, correspondence, and memorabilia.  The journey began in Milan, where Verdi made his debut in 1839, and explored the composer’s international success, his relationship with publishers, singers, and political authorities, his creative process, and his reception in the new world and in today’s culture.

New York University houses the American Institute for Verdi Studies, a leading research center for Verdi’s life and works.  Most of the selections on display in this exhibit were acquired through the AIVS and are preserved in its Archive, in the Elmer Holmes Bobst Library, and in the Fales Library & Special Collections at New York University.

Giuseppe Verdi: Words, Notes, Legacy was on display in the Mandouha S. Bobst Gallery and the Avery Fisher Center, located in the Elmer H. Bobst Library at New York University, 70 Washington Square South, New York.

A principal focus was how Verdi’s works have been interpreted, imagined, and appropriated. Further information on the conference is available on the conference page at www.nyu.edu/projects/verdi/thirdcentury.html.
